Opinion: Medical error report too little, too late

Most people will experience at least one medical diagnostic error — an inaccurate or delayed diagnosis — in their lifetime, sometimes with devastating consequences.

That’s the top-line takeaway from a new report, “Improving Diagnosis in Health Care,” by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. The Sept. 22 news release announcing publication of the report had the headline, “Urgent change needed to improve diagnosis in health care or diagnostic errors will likely worsen.”
